ABSTRACT

Resumen EL asma es una enfermedad relacionada con estrés oxidativo. Los practicantes de la medicina alternativa han usado plantas que tienen altas concentraciones de polifenoles en el tratamiento de pacientes con asma. Este artículo revisa la administración de antioxidantes no vitamínicos en pacientes con asma, con insistencia en los polifenoles. Se realizó una búsqueda en Google Scholar y en la base de datos de RIMA de Astra Zeneca con las palabras clave y frases "asthma and flavonoids", "antioxidant therapy in asthma" "resveratrol and asthma" y "polyphenols and asthma". Se priorizó la búsqueda de estudios experimentales en modelos animales y de estudios en humanos. Existe tendencia a aceptar los efectos favorables de los polifenoles en pacientes con asma. La mayor parte de la información es más consistente en trabajos experimentales realizados en animales que cuando se comparan entre sí los pocos estudios clínicos en humanos. La interpretación de los estudios a partir de experiencias con la dieta tiene el inconveniente que el tipo y concentración de polifenoles cambia entre poblaciones y depende de regiones geográficas. Es recomendable diseñar estudios con gran cantidad de personas para evaluar la contribución de la terapia con polifenoles en sujetos con asma en profilaxis y en manejo de crisis y en terapias para el control de la enfermedad a largo plazo.


Abstract Asthma is a disease related to oxidative stress. Practitioners of alternative medicine have used plants that have high concentrations of polyphenols in the treatment of patients with asthma. This paper reviews the use of non-vitamin antioxidants in asthma, with emphasis in polyphenols. A search was made in Google Scholar and in the RIMA database of Astra Zeneca with the keywords and phrases "asthma and flavonoids", "antioxidant therapy in asthma", "resveratrol and asthma" and "polyphenols and asthma". We prioritized the search for experimental studies in animal models and studies with humans. There is a tendency to accept the favorable effects of polyphenols in asthma. Most of the information is more consistent in experimental work on animals than when comparing experiences among the few clinical studies in humans. The interpretation of studies from dietary experiences has the drawback that the type and concentration of polyphenols changes between populations and depends on geographical regions. It is advisable to design studies with a large number of people to evaluate the contribution of polyphenols in subjects with asthma in prophylaxis, crisis management and long-term disease control therapies.

Resumen La vasculitis leucocitoclástica es un trastorno autoinmunitario que afecta pequeños vasos y provoca inflamación, destrucción y necrosis de los mismos; con frecuencia es subdiagnosticada. La causa es multifactorial, la fisiopatología es compleja y los inmunomoduladores son los medicamentos más importantes en su tratamiento. Este artículo tiene por objetivo revisar el estado actual del conocimiento en vasculitis leucocitocástica con insistencia en el diagnóstico y tratamiento. Se revisaron artículos publicados en el periodo comprendido entre 1990 y 2017. Los navegadores fueron Google Crome y Firefox y el motor de búsqueda fue Scholar google. Las bases de datos consultadas fueron: MEDLINE, RIMA Astra-Zeneca y las guías de práctica clínica del sistema de salud mexicano (CENETEC). Se revisaron 108 publicaciones relevantes para el tema, priorizando las pertenecientes a revistas indizadas en MEDLINE y Science Citation Index-JCR. Se requieren estudios para integrar subgrupos clínicos y de tratamiento e investigar los mecanismos de daño tisular en cada subgrupo. La inmunomodulación juega un papel central en el tratamiento.


Abstract Leukocytoclastic vasculitis is an autoimmune disorder that affects small vessels, and causes inflammation, destruction and necrosis of the same. It is often underdiagnosed. The etiology is multifactorial, the pathophysiology is complex and immunomodulators are the most important medications in their treatment. This article aims to review the current state of knowledge in leukocytoclastic vasculitis with emphasis on diagnosis and treatment. Articles published in the period from 1990 to 2017 were reviewed. The browsers were Google Crome and Firefox and the search engine was Scholar google. The database consulted was: MEDLINE, RIMA Astra-Zeneca and the clinical practice guidelines of the Mexican health system (CENETEC); 108 relevant publications to the subject were reviewed, prioritizing those belonging to journals indexed in MEDLINE and Science Citation Index-JCR. Studies are required to integrate clinical and treatment subgroups and investigate the mechanisms of tissue damage in each subgroup. Immunomodulation plays a central role in the treatment.

ABSTRACT

Resumen: OBJETIVO Determinar si el consumo de aguacate en pacientes con síndrome metabólico atenúa la disfunción endotelial, el estrés oxidativo y la inflamación inducida por el consumo de hamburguesa. MATERIAL Y MÉTODO Estudio experimental, longitudinal, prospectivo, con distribución al azar, cruzado, abierto pero ciego para los evaluadores de los desenlaces finales, efectuado de junio a agosto de 2018. Se incluyeron pacientes con síndrome metabólico que se clasificaron en dos grupos: al primer grupo se le dio a consumir carne de hamburguesa, mientras que al segundo grupo se le proporcionó la misma dieta adicionada con un aguacate. RESULTADOS Se reclutaron 14 pacientes (11 hombres y 3 mujeres) con síndrome metabólico. Al consumir hamburguesa disminuyeron las concentraciones de óxido nítrico en comparación cuando se añadió aguacate que inhibió este efecto (p < 0.05). Al consumir hamburguesa disminuyeron las concentraciones plasmáticas de lipoperoxidación, efecto que fue inhibido al agregar aguacate (p < 0.05). Al consumir hamburguesa las especies reactivas de oxígeno aumentaron su expresión en monocitos, efecto inhibido al adicionar aguacate a la dieta (p < 0.05). No se encontraron diferencias en los niveles de las moléculas de adhesión de CD11b, CD18 en granulocitos y en monocitos. CONCLUSIONES El aguacate de manera aguda bloquea la reducción de las concentraciones de óxido nítrico, disminuye la formación de especies reactivas de oxígeno y bloquea la reducción de la peroxidación de lípidos causada por la hamburguesa.


Abstract: OBJECTIVE To determinate if the ingestion of avocado in patients with metabolic syndrome diminishes endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation after ingesting hamburger meat. MATERIAL AND METHOD An experimental, longitudinal, randomized, prospective, crossed, open but blinded for outcomes evaluators trial was done from June to August 2018 in patients with metabolic syndrome in agreement to NCEP criteria. These patients were evaluated for endothelial function, inflammatory state and oxidative stress after two treatments: a hamburger meal and a hamburger meal plus avocado. RESULTS Fourteen patients with metabolic syndrome were included (11 men and 3 women). When ingesting hamburger meat, NO levels were raised compared when adding avocado that blunted this effect (p < 0.05). Hamburger decreased lipoperoxidation, effect that was inhibited by adding avocado (p < 0.05). The oxidative reactive species elevated their monocyte expression after hamburger ingestion; this effect was also inhibited by adding avocado (p < 0.05). No differences were found in the levels of adhesive molecules CD11b, CD18 in granulocytes and monocytes. CONCLUSIONS In an acute manner, avocado blocks the reduction of nitric oxide, diminishes formation of oxygen reactive species and blocks reduction of lipid peroxidation concentrations caused by a hamburger.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Stress tolerance is a key attribute that must be considered when using yeast cells for industrial applications. High temperature is one factor that can cause stress in yeast. High environmental temperature in particular may exert a natural selection pressure to evolve yeasts into thermotolerant strains. In the present study, three yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, MC4, and Kluyveromyces marxianus, OFF1 and SLP1) isolated from hot environments were exposed to increased temperatures and were then compared with a laboratory yeast strain. Their resistance to high temperature, oxidative stress, and antioxidant response were evaluated, along with the fatty acid composition of their cell membranes. The SLP1 strain showed a higher specific growth rate, biomass yield, and biomass volumetric productivity while also showing lower duplication time, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and lipid peroxidation. In addition, the SLP1 strain demonstrated more catalase activity after temperature was increased, and this strain also showed membranes enriched in saturated fatty acids. It is concluded that the SLP1 yeast strain is a thermotolerant yeast with less oxidative stress and a greater antioxidant response. Therefore, this strain could be used for fermentation at high temperatures.
